In Runescape death means the loss of gear and goods

For most players engaging in combat vs. a mob or a player, the worse the fight goes, the more exciting the fight gets. In other MMOs where dying is an annoying inconvenience, in RuneScape death means the loss of gear and goods that may very well have taken tens or hundreds of hours worth of effort to acquire. Dying for many players can be a devastating, rage-quitting experience. I think if you wanted a great old game with not so great 90s graphics, then you would be much better off playing Asherons Call. Runescape is a 90s level game on par with a ps1 diablo clone made in an era when games were well into using 3d.

The combat system is not something to write home about either, its hardly a system at all, have knife will stab. Runescape does have that sort of UO gathering thing and player housing I can give them kudos for that, but they sorely lack in the pvp strategy market. Seriously a 2d nentindo game from the 80s is almost more complicated, actually I think final fight IS more complicated. Fair as the game stands now I can give it a low 7 on sandbox elements and how they attract lots of players so the world is rather alive. But I couldn’t get anywhere past 8.3 until the pvp/combat system is far better than it is now.

Definitely that would mean a major game overhaul which I doubt will happen. But that’s just me, its easy to hate on runescape, but I have played it, its a lot more engrossing than most asian grinders. I started playing rs when it was 2 weeks old and yet their it is still up huge memory with friends, and family. Although it is such a great game, I agree it needs updating. Then again it would not be a browser based game, look of how far it has come for being a bbg. Although when a rs3 comes out with good graphics and all with character switch over. I will be playing that indeed.

The troll armies broke and attempted to flee

For nearly four thousand years the high elves lived peacefully within the secluded safety of their kingdom. Nevertheless, the vindictive trolls were not so easily defeated. They plotted and schemed in the depths of the forests and waited for the numbers of their warbands to grow. Finally, a mighty troll army charged out from the shadowy forests and once again laid siege to the shining spires of Quel’Thalas. The elves found that although humans were innately clumsy in their handling of magic, they possessed a startling natural affinity for it. One hundred men were taught the very basics of the elves’ magical secrets: no more than was absolutely necessary to combat the trolls.

Convinced that their human students were ready to aid in the struggle, the elves left Strom and traveled north alongside the mighty armies of King Thoradin. The united elf and human armies clashed against the overwhelming troll warbands at the foot of theAlteracMountains. The battle lasted for many days, but the unflagging armies of Arathor never tired or gave an inch of ground before the troll onslaught. The elven lords deemed that the time had come to release the powers of their magic upon the enemy. The hundred human magi and a multitude of the elves sorcerers called down the fury of the heavens and set the troll armies ablaze.

The elemental fires prevented the trolls from regenerating their wounds and burned their tortured forms from the inside out. As the troll armies broke and attempted to flee, Thoradin’s armies ran them down and slaughtered every last one of their soldiers. The trolls would never fully recover from their defeat, and history would never see the trolls rise as one nation again. Assured that Quel’Thalas was saved from destruction, the elves made a pledge of loyalty and friendship to the nation of Arathor and to the bloodline of its king, Thoradin. Humans and elves would nurture peaceful relations for ages to come.

The only constraint is your own time

The more I read about, think about, and play Diablo 3 at high levels, the more baffled I am by some of developer Blizzard Entertainment’s decisions. An examination of the design of Diablo 3, when combined with the company’s public statements on the project, indicate confusion over the goals of Diablo 3, as if there was no conceptual development of Diablo 3 as an overall experience. Not having been present when decisions were made, I can’t speak to the reasons behind Blizzard’s choices. But however they were made, those choices have manifested in distinct, negative ways, which should have been easily predicted, yet oddly weren’t.

Earlier this month, a Blizzard community manager made news by publicly admitting that Diablo 3 current “endgame” was unsustainable.The term “endgame” has become popular with subscription-based massively multiplayer role-playing games, like World of Warcraft. In that particular genre, the term makes sense. Blizzard doesn’t want people to let their World of Warcraft subscription lapse, so it has more difficult or repetitive goals available once the characters hit the level ceiling, usually consisting of raiding or player-versus-player combat. Diablo 3 doesn’t have PVP yet, so raiding is the best, albeit inappropriate, comparison. In World of Warcraft, raiding requires larger groups of people than Diablo 3′s four.

Raiding is also more tightly constrained in World of Warcraft. You can only kill major raid bosses once per week, only a handful of items drop after each boss, and those potential items are known in advance (unless you’re a bleeding edge raid guild). This is a design which is guaranteed to take a certain amount of time. One does not simply walk into Deathwing’s boss fight. It requires weeks and months of raiding earlier dungeons, slowly improving your gear. In Diablo 3, the only constraint is your own time. It’s an action-RPG, and this is normal in that genre, whereas it’s normal for MMORPGs to have time constraints so that player progression can be controlled. Diablo 3 is fast, with lots of combat and lots of death. World of Warcraft is slow and methodical.

Today sees the release of a significant performance improvement update to RuneScape which will improve frame rate and the general game play experience, which has been an issue for some players recently. As many of you will be aware, some previous anti-bot initiatives caused an adverse affect on the frame rate and performance of the game. The Game Engine Team has been working very hard on solutions to this and the update should bring significant increases in overall playability for the vast majority of those affected, noticeably more so on lower-spec computers.

As part of our ongoing effort to combat bots, this update also contains additional adjustments to the engine which will significantly disrupt bots. These changes are only part of their ongoing efforts to continually improve the performance of the game, as well as to combat bots, and we have further updates in these areas planned for the next few months. At times we may go a little quiet in these areas – this is because it’s often hard to share details of what we’re working on without giving bot makers information that they can use to their advantage. Rest assured, though, that we understand how these issues affect how you play and enjoy the game, so solving them is of paramount importance to us.

The closed beta will be open to RuneScape members

As announced, one of the most eagerly anticipated and frequently requested updates will be launching in RuneScape this summer. The Evolution of Combat project will see the biggest change to any system in RuneScape’s history and, as if that wasn’t exciting enough, RuneScape members will also be able to apply to take part in first ever limited access closed beta. All those wishing to apply for the beta and gain exclusive access to the update before everyone else will be able to sign up for the chance to take part from the 1st June. Beta players will not only be the first to get to grips with the new combat mechanics but will also have the unique opportunity to help test and shape the dynamics of the update ahead of its full release later this year.

By taking part in the beta and showing us your best use of swordplay, eagle-eyed archer’s tricks and esoteric wizard’s gambits, you’ll be working with us to create a battle system that’s fluid, interactive, and well and truly built for you. Over the coming weeks we will be revealing some of the incredible new features to whet your appetite, but remember to sign up on the 1st June to ensure you don’t miss out on the chance to take part. Full details of how to register for the beta along with some tantalising teasers will be announced on runescape official website.

The first batch of beta testers will be able to enter the game on the 26th June with all members gaining access shortly after. All members interested in taking part will be granted beta access before the full release, but we encourage you to register as early as possible to be in with a chance of being among the first to experience the update. The closed beta will only be open to RuneScape members, so if you want to be in with a chance of experiencing the new combat system, be sure to sign up for RuneScape membership before the 1st June.
