Firefall : Dynamic Events DetailedFirefall : Dynamic Events Detailed

The Firefall blog has been updated with a new post by Red 5′s Bryan Malloroy. In it, Malloroy discusses the notion of dynamic world events and bringing the PvE world of Firefall to life. From there, he goes on to discuss how dynamic events are created and what players can expect from the system.
When designing a dynamic event for Firefall, we need to first make sure that our idea matches our own definition of “dynamic”. First and foremost, the event must be fun and should test the players’ skill in a variety of interesting ways. Beyond that, we also try to keep dynamic events relatively simple – we want players to be able to understand what they need to do as soon as they see that an event has popped near them. One trick that we use to help with this is to design the event’s mechanics without the use of any UI whatsoever. Once we’ve done that, we’ll add whatever we feel is absolutely necessary in terms of visual cues for what the player needs to do, but not much else

GuardianGuardian

Guardians are devoted fighters who protect their allies and smite their enemies by drawing from the power of their virtues. True guardians are brilliant tacticians and selfless defenders who know when to sacrifice their own defenses to empower their allies to achieve victory.

Guardians can elect to relinquish the benefits granted by the virtues and extend their protective power to nearby allies. This ability makes the guardian an excellent supportive fighter whether they are leading an assault or defending your party’s flanks.

The fire of Justice burns the enemies of guardians. With Justice, every fifth attack burns their opponents.

With Courage, guardians can shrug off even a mighty blow. Every 40 seconds this virtue is active, guardians are granted Aegis, which blocks the next incoming attack.

Through Resolve, guardians passively regenerate health, allowing them to wade into the most dangerous situation and come out alive.

Chris Roberts on the Final FrontierChris Roberts on the Final Frontier

Last week, Chris Roberts came out swinging with his blockbuster announcement of Star Citizen. We managed to catch up with Chris at GDC Online last week to talk about the game and much more. Keep reading!

While GDC Online may have seemed quiet to some, it was not quiet for Chris Roberts. Chris is a game design legend known mostly for Wing Commander, a very popular game in the late 1990s which many view as one of the top space combat games of all time. After much success Chris moved on to films for a while and got out of the game busthewariness. However, he confessed to us that he has never stopped playing video games on a daily basis. Now years later, Roberts is re-entering the galaxy with Star Citizen, an in-depth galactic world with ships, space stations, single player options, and massive online battles.  The game offers a lot to players and the opening cinematics we saw at the show are breathtaking. We got the chance to talk to Chris at GDC Online and were extremely impressed with what we saw of the game.

Wield Excalibur in New Update Wield Excalibur in New Update

PvP players will definitely want to check out Knight Age and its latest update to snag an opportunity to wield the legendary Excalibur sword. To do so, players will have to face off against other knights in a battle royale to determine who is worthy.

Excalibur represents three key components in Knight Age: the battle for the weapon, the power it imbues to its wielder, and ultimately its glory.  The battle for Excalibur is a PVP battle against 100 knights that begins once per day when the elusive sword appears in the middle of a mysterious lake. All participating players, regardless of their level, will be transported to a special battlefield in which the goal is to run to the center of the lake and successfully pull out the Excalibur sword.  However, this task is neither easy nor possible on its first try.  A mixture of talent and choice will help as players continue attempting to free Excalibur. Additionally, the player must also defend it from other on-coming players.  Whether by luck or skill, the end reward for pulling free the legendary Excalibur will be worth the battle scars!

Find out more on the Knight Age site.

How Free-to-Play is Killing Gaming – Part OneHow Free-to-Play is Killing Gaming – Part One

A lot of talk has swirled around the MMO space in the past couple of years about the free to play movement and its effect on the genre as a whole. In a new editorial piece here at MMORPG.com, we take a look at the notion that F2P is killing gaming. Check it out and then add your thoughts in the comments.

There’s no doubt that, in the MMO genre especially, that there have been many lapses over the past decade; titles that failed to meet expectations, titles that started strong and withered away, titles that never even made it to their target release date. We’ve seen all sorts of various approaches in the last decade to try and stimulate consumer interest and retain their hearts and minds; everything ranging from contests and giveaways to paid-prize tournaments and pre-order bonuses. Yet, try as they might, there hasn’t been a title that has left a lasting impact on the genre since World of Warcraft came out. In the last 2 years especially, a new trend has begun to arise in the online gaming industry, and that trend is the switch from pay-to-play to free-to-play. I’m writing this article because I believe that free-to-play is slowly-but-surely killing off the industry, and I want to illustrate the problems arising with the free-to-play experience.

Guild Wars 2 : Colin Johanson on the Live Teams & the FutureGuild Wars 2 : Colin Johanson on the Live Teams & the Future

Last week, ArenaNet announced that there would not be just one Guild Wars 2 Live Team to keep the world fresh and functioning. We were told that there would be SIX (or more as needed)! We caught up with Colin Johanson to talk about the Live Teams and how they will function and what they will bring to Guild Wars 2. Read on!
MMORPG.com:  Congrats on such a successful launch, Colin.  Before we get to the “future plans” for Guild Wars 2, can you share with us what the team sees as the biggest current pressing issue in the live game, and what are you all doing to remedy it?

Colin Johanson: Thank you very much! It has been incredible and humbling to see so many people pour into the game, and how positive the reviews and feedback on the game have been so far. Of course with an MMO, once the game ships is when your work has really only begun, which leads me to the answer to your question….
