He also notes that the original game’s userbase will be prioritized in A Realm Reborn’s beta queue and that players will “be able to use their current characters in the beta test as well.” Though that may not be at the kickoff of the beta, he says, “We’re working in a way to try to get it as close to the beginning of the beta test as possible.”

A Realm Reborn is headed to both PlayStation 3 and PC later this year.

Naoki Yoshida quite openly stated that if there is a large enough chunk of players who wanted the servers back on, he will make that happen, even though nothing more would get saved. This raises a variety of questions — chiefly, why anyone would want to keep playing the game with the explicit understanding that the whole game is getting rolled back before too much longer, but I’m not one of the ones who voted for the reactivation.

But as we enter the final phase — which is basically just through early next week, if you’re not keeping track — it seems as if it’s worth discussing the servers going down and then coming back on. Really, what else do we have to occupy our minds regarding Final Fantasy XIV right now?

One last hurrah.If you haven’t been keeping track of dates or just had allowed them to slip from your mind — as I had — it’s worth noting that any urgent bits of progress you feel the need to get finished before the second version of the game launches will need to be completed by October 31st. That means that you’re running out of time, or more accurately you are more or less out of time and need to put the finishing steps on what you’re doing.

Personally, I didn’t have a whole lot left that I felt the need to clear up. I may go and turn in a few last quests just for the sake of completionism, but there were several accomplishments that I knew I wasn’t going to have the time or the drive to clear before the version changeover. Where isn’t all that relevant, since all of your marks are going to be converted to gil, but you don’t want to miss out on that extra coin, do you? Of course you don’t. And any last few bits of dated gear that you want to buy should probably be taken care of quickly, although how relevant that will be is a tad more debatable.

After Wednesday, you can still take care of a few last elements, but none of them will matter. The game will come crashing down, and you’ll be left to wait for the servers to come back in in the near future… at which point I’m not sure what you can still accomplish.

I'm not, though.I said earlier that I can’t understand the impulse to have the servers turned back on, but that’s only half true. Part of me completely understands because if this is the one game you play, the prospect of it turning off for four months or so is probably disheartening. You don’t want to be deprived for all that time; you want to be able to log back in and enjoy the game, even if you intellectually know there’s no point to playing.

The question becomes how long that mindset will persist, however, because I assure you that within about a week, you’re going to look back at what you did over the past week and ask yourself whether any part of it matters.

MMO achievements are tricky things at the best of times. Readers of my other columns will know that I’m facing several years of work and accomplishment gone like dust in the wind at the end of November, the sort of thing that puts the lie to the concept that these games are long-term investments. I’ve spent a lot of money and time in City of Heroes, but when it turns off, away go the things I worked toward.

But even then, I played with the tacit understanding that every step in the game was a step toward something. Maybe I wouldn’t make huge gains, but I would at least be making some progress toward an overall goal. I wouldn’t just get a chance to go out and level again without any hope of that mattering, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen when FFXIV comes back online. That’s not a lame duck, it’s an undead monstrosity lurching around and waiting for the final bullet that puts it out of its misery.

In theory, this could be a time to revitalize and rebuild the community. But the only people who can log in are the people currently playing when the game was turned off. Ms. Lady, for instance, couldn’t come back and tool around to see whether the game was more to her tastes now. The community’s fractured status isn’t going to be fixed by this gesture.

Nor does it have the usual saving grace of a beta — namely, the opportunity to practice a bit more. The game is changing so significantly that we’re not going to be able to transfer a lot of our skills over. More time practicing with your Paladin won’t mean you’re any better with the finished product.

So I can’t see myself playing the game much after the end of the world. That leads me to wonder what exactly the point is, but maybe it’s just not for me.

Well, on a personal level I kind of feel like the whole impact of the ‘End of the World’ scenario would be greater if the world did completely end until A Realm Reborn. It would have been like a real-life tie-in to the in-game scenario. While I probably won’t play again anyway after November 11th until A Realm Reborn is out, it just won’t feel the same if I could theoretically log back in at any time.

Still, A Realm Reborn looks amazing and I can’t wait to play it! I’m looking forward to starting my Arcanist/Summoner class too!

Ideas worth taking for A Realm Reborn

So what does the completely redone Final Fantasy XIV engine look like? I have no idea. I’m not in the alpha test. Considering I got into the beta last time only at the absolute tail end of everything, I am not really surprised. That isn’t the point; the point that I’m meandering toward is that the game could play like the previous version with quests and a lick of paint or it could play like a completely different animal altogether. I have to wait and see, as most of you do.

I will say this, though: I’m hoping Yoshida’s awareness of the larger world of MMOs is coming through strongly. Unlike his predecessor, Yoshi-P seems very aware of the fact that there are games out there aside from Final Fantasy XI, and that’s not even counting the existing love letters to longtime series fans. That having been said, there are at least a few things I hope he’s swiping from the industry for the relaunched version when it finally comes out. As I’ve said before, it’s not enough for the game to just be capable; it has to really stand out, and I think there are a few ideas to draw on in that regard.

Guild Wars 2 trait lines

I play Rhio in a lot of games.  She's got no cat ears here.Let’s be honest with ourselves and admit that the game’s current system for customizing your character sort of blows. You’ve got bonus points, but they’re a bonus only in the sense that you can technically allocate them to stupid stats that make you useless in combat. You can use abilities from other classes, but those almost universally are either absurdly useful to everyone or completely useless outside of the source class. Beyond that, you’ve got nothing. Jobs arguably make this a little bit worse, as you have even fewer spaces to equip abilities and to make you different from another Paladin or Monk or whatever with the same equipment.

Whether or not this will be improved remains to be seen, and since the series as a whole has moved well away from heavy character customization, I’m not holding my breath. (Final Fantasy Tactics appears to have been the apex of that particular thought process.) But there is a good place to pinch some inspiration, and that would be the trait lines that Guild Wars 2 offers.

Obviously, an exact parallel wouldn’t work, but imagine if each class had three avenues of advancement, each focusing on a field of development that made sense for that class. Putting points in a given line unlocks new traits for use on any class while also unlocking some class-specific traits and improving relevant stats. So you could choose whether you want your Marauder/Fighter to focus on the tanking side of the class or the damage-dealing side, or perhaps you could even do something very unusual like splice in some magic use.

Likely? No. But it would synergize nicely with what we’ve been promised for hand-raised chocobos, so perhaps there’s a glimmer of hope after all…

Level flexibility of City of Heroes

Soar so far they cannot find you.Level sync in Final Fantasy XI was a spectacular system. City of Heroes did it even better, though, and that means that I’m turning to my sadly departed dear old friend as a source of inspiration for this. In City of Heroes, once you reached level 30 or so, your level ceased to have a great deal of meaning to you.

This isn’t to say that you didn’t get more powerful abilities as you continued to level. But most of those were situational, and none of them defined your character setup as much as the stuff you’d grabbed a little before the halfway mark. A level 30 character could group up with some level 50s and be quite effective in battle, lacking some tricks and some fanciness but still able to hold her own.

Final Fantasy XIV has not run with this idea in the past, and generally, the series as a whole has eschewed it. Outside of Final Fantasy II, the first set of skills you learn are obsoleted as soon as a second set is available. But FFXIV’s big overhaul of class abilities started moving in the other direction. If your early abilities are your most universally used ones, then you could easily replicate the feel of CoH’s ad-hoc parties where you didn’t have to really sync up to a specific area — you just all got together and went, and there was something level-appropriate you could all do.

Oh, and I know I’ve said this before, but there are a lot of hurt and angry CoH players out there who might shower love on a company that showed that spirit. Hint.

Reverse engineering of Star Wars: The Old Republic, RIFT, FFXI…

I’ve talked before about how FFXIV’s crafting is at once brilliant and a seriously irritating piece of work. Part of that is because even after you navigate the labyrinthine requirements for crafting something and manage to craft it successfully… you need to craft more. Not to use anything you’re crafting, but just so you can level enough to use all of your other materials.

And then you run out of materials, and you have to go gather more, and for some reason zinc has to be mined a million miles away from everything else, then you have to go and gather copper, and… well, you get the idea. If I keep talking about this, I might have Goldsmithing flashbacks.

The point I’m slowly getting at is that this is a system that would greatly benefit from the reverse engineering found in many games. Star Wars: The Old Republic has a good system for this. RIFT has one that I’m not quite as fond of, but it’s very functional. FFXI allowed you to break items back down from a different synth. There are doubtlessly several other games that offer similar functions; I’m pretty sure EVE Online has something similar, just to name one.

Even if breaking down items were nothing more than a necessary evil that gave you no skill points or anything, being able to just rip these things apart would be immensely useful. You’d be able to spend less time worrying about making the wrong things for leveling, less time filling up your inventory with crap you don’t want and can’t sell, and more time just crafting. The crafting fundamentals in the game are so good that it needs something to improve the whole experience, and this seems like a step in the right direction.

New FFXIV questing and combat video released

Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn announcement trailer

Square has released a new five-minute alpha trailer featuring combat and questing footage from Final Fantasy XIV’s A Realm Reborn reboot.

ZAM notes that the video shows off low-level enemies as well as mouse-enabled actions and targeting. Square is also tinkering with FFXIV’s battle system, with particular attention being paid to algorithms and the claim system.

If you actually played those games or did a little bit more research you would know that it was not the combat that made the games fail. That was the only great thing about them. Final Fantasy and the case of the missing alts

As I’ve mentioned before, my first MMO was Final Fantasy XI, and I think I’d be remiss not to observe that a lot of my MMO habits came about as a direct reaction to that game. My love of soloing comes in no small part as a result of the misery of trying to get anything accomplished by myself in Vana’diel, for example. Alts appear to be more or less the same thing.

Saying that having an alt in Final Fantasy XI was counterproductive is like saying that arsenic is unhealthy. This was one of the many traits that Final Fantasy XIV carried over from its predecessor, but it removed any real option of having a second character serving as your bag space expansion because there wasn’t a proper mail system to facilitate it. So there was even less reason to pay for an extra character slot there. Alts were just as absent in Final Fantasy XIV’s original incarnation.

But this might be changing on both sides of the equation. FFXIV’s Legacy players get extra slots for free, after all. Might there be some hope for alts in the future?
Why you never wanted an alt

Laugh all you want, you'll be spending the rest of your life in this house.FFXI is actively inimical toward alts in a way that other games really aren’t, and that extends beyond the game’s “one character can do everything” nature. One character can also level everything in The Secret World, but the process of doing so is far less arduous.

Let’s leave aside the idea that a second character is going to require you splitting your time between two characters and you’ll thus be slower in leveling; that’s true in every game. FFXI also has a large number of elements that require lengthy and difficult quests to unlock, and those elements are far beyond matters of convenience. You need these things to be functional in the game.

Subjobs are an obvious example I’ve brought up before, but there are others. Airship passes, for example, are annoying to get at the best of times. The one to travel between the main nations requires you to complete a mission that requires either a large group of allies or a dedicated friend who can keep you in Sneak and Invisible while you dart past corridors of murder. Traveling to Kazham requires you to farm enemies that you are probably just strong enough to beat reliably if you’re an offensive class rather than a mage, and that was just to level for five levels. Traveling to Whitegate for the first time means doing both of the subjob quests again.

And that doesn’t even touch on advanced jobs, also known as the real meat of the game, each of which requires another ornate quest to unlock, some relentlessly brutal.

FFXIV isn’t quite this cutthroat, but even it had things like Chocobos that had to be unlocked again for each subsequent character. FFXIV’s lack of any interaction between your characters also meant that a new character started without most of the benefits that a higher-level character can provide. Rather than having a leg up in what you’re doing, your only real advantage is a knowledge of what comes next.

As a result, it’s not surprising that the only alts in FFXI were meant to serve as banks to make up for the game’s awful inventory system. Both games are pretty unfriendly to playing more than one character. FFXI arguably went a step further by allowing you to change your allegiance in terms of nation, meaning that the number of choices you had to make permanently were vanishingly small.

But will it change?

I don't know if it will be viable, but it will happen.  Yes indeed.The odds of your having a need to create alts in FFXIV or FFXI is still low, although the latter will probably still require you to do so insofar as you need to deal with that stupid inventory system. But perhaps the games are becoming a bit less actively hostile.

FFXIV’s relaunch will have a proper mail system, but for many players, it’ll also be bringing in existing high-level characters. You’ll have fewer reasons to see the lower parts of the game if you’re already level 50 with several classes, even if you will have a few new things to level such as Arcanist. So there’s a little more impetus for you to start fresh and experience things anew. Plus, if you really want a bank alt, the game seems poised to facilitate that.

But leveling in FFXIV has never been particularly brutal, at least not since we moved past the days of randomized skill gains at launch. (I occasionally wonder how I actually played the game at launch.) FFXI has far less forgiving leveling, and even if a lot of those barriers to entry are removed as has been promised, it’s questionable how many other characters you would actually need.

A lot of that depends upon Seekers of Adoulin, which I’m slowly getting excited for. If that expansion is both replete with one-time choices and accessible from a reasonably lower level, it might facilitate our having more than a single character in Vana’diel. Alts by definition require you to have choices to make differently the second time around — choose a different race, a different class, a different faction. FFXI and FFXIV don’t have any of those one-time choices past the first, as a rule.

Honestly? I don’t see either game making alts very attractive. But I’d like to think it’s possible if for no other reason than I want to play about seven different characters in FFXIV’s relaunch. Come on, people: Highlander women.Here is what you want more content, click FFXIV Power leveling.
