The design for combat resurrection effects has changed a good deal for Cataclysm, and we want to make sure players are clear on how spells like Rebirth and Create Soulstone now function. Rebirth has a 10-minute cooldown and Create Soulstone has a 15-minute cooldown. On raid boss encounters, you can only use one of these combat resurrection spells (so one Rebirth or one Soulstone) per attempt for 10-player raids. For 25-player raids you can use three forms of combat resurrection per raid boss attempt (so three of any combination of Rebirth and Soulstone). The count is incremented as soon as a player accepts a resurrection, so one can always choose not to accept if he or she wants someone else to get the resurrection instead. There is no equivalent of the Sated debuff (which tracks Bloodlust/Heroism usage), but you will get an error message if you try to resurrect too many players, and we might add tracking to our raid interface if there is demand forit. Outside of raid content, you can use as many battle resurrections as you have available.

While I am really stoked for Guild Wars 2, my experiences with the original game have been scattershot to say the least. I first played the game in beta and I remember my eyes being seared by the super intense bloom the game had (exacerbated by the fact I started on the white sands of a beach) and truth be told this (along with my inability to jump and the invisible walls I encountered) was enough to turn me away from the game for some time. Over the past few years I’ve checked out the game in small doses but I’ve never really committed to it.

As I’m playing through Faxion Online from UTV Ignition Games, I find myself wondering why it’s mostly these smaller companies pushing the envelope in the MMO world. Now I’m fully aware that UTV is a fully-funded publisher of games, with a growing stable of software at its disposal. It’s not exactly two guys in their basement, after all. But UTV isn’t Blizzard, EA, or BioWare. And I’m somewhat confident (without any real-world knowledge) that Faxion didn’t cost the company anywhere near the amount of money that something like The Old Republic is costing BioWare. My hypothesis, and maybe this is just common sense, is that the lower the cost of development the more likely the game which comes out will be something other than the norm. It’s up to these smaller companies, with their smaller budgets and smaller teams, to make something big that will change the way we play.

The APB Reloaded dev blog has been updated with information about the “Third District”. The team is overhauling what was once The Asylum and redesigning it with new game modes. The team has provided some nifty screenshots to tease fans about what the area’s new purpose and game modes will be. Missions:

 

To be frank, a lot of the current missions are not up to the quality bar that we expect. They focus extensively on spots that can be camped, requiring one team to do something and the other team to pick them off. While this can be fun for some of the game play, it can also be incredibly frustrating in the long term, especially in an area that’s very defensible. On the other hand, there are an absolute ton of missions (around 250 or so), and changing them all is a gargantuan task. We’re going to add a contact to each district that you don’t level and gives out new missions that we’ll add that will be more fun for all participants. He doesn’t just breathe it, he hops up into the air and the sheer force of the flame holds him there as a hovering jet of white-hot flame as my enemies singe and bubble before me. I can say that my lack of true familiarity with the game’s UI (which is looking mighty clean and polished) had me a bit confused. The weapon skills are on one side of the health-meter and the class skills are on the other side. So for most of the time I pretty much used just my weapon skills, but they worked so well I didn’t even notice. There’s a great single-target attack with this weapon set that triple-hits the enemy for some amazing damage too. He leaps off the ground and spins and twirls around as he slices and dices the enemy in mid-air. I’m pretty sure that this weapon combo isn’t intended for the “defense and self-sacrifice” nature of the class. No, it’s meant for killing. And it does its job well.

James started off by saying that launch went well and was smoother than they expected. They have now gotten queue lines under control. They are also focused on the population across game levels to keep track of how many players are hitting end game early. The team has been using their maintenance window to fix bugs in weekly patches and have been successful in cleaning some of the problems early on. One of the great things James pointed out is that the average play time per player remains very high. Much of the post centers around this: Here’s our philosophy on microtransactions: We think players should have the opportunity to spend money on items that provide visual distinction and offer more ways to express themselves. They should also be able to spend money on account services and on time-saving convenience items. But it’s never OK for players to buy a game and not be able to enjoy what they paid for without additional purchases, and Guild Wars 2 has been built, says O’Brien, for microtransactions from the get-go rather than as an afterthought similar to the original Guild Wars. The game will have three currencies: Gold that can be traded and used for ordinary transactions; Karma which cannot be traded and is used for purchasing unique items in-game; and Gems that players purchase and use for microtransaction purchases.

From a player’s perspective, RMT companies have all the wrong motivations: the more money they make from selling gold, the more they spam ads in the game, run bot networks to farm gold, and hack accounts to loot them for gold. Conversely, under our system, players have all the right motivations. If a player buys gold from another player, he gets the gold he wants, the selling player gets gems she can use for microtransactions, and ArenaNet generates revenue from the sale of gems that we can use to keep supporting and updating the game. Everyone wins.
